In this blog post, Jason from Fox Tree Creations shares his journey in finding a portable leather sewing machine, ultimately choosing the Ultra Feed from Sew Right. He discusses the unboxing experience, the accessories included, and his expectations for using the machine in future projects.
Hello, my name is Jason from Fox Tree Creations, where we strive to bring the best leather and laser engraving products straight to you. In this blog post, I will share my journey in finding a portable leather sewing machine that suits my needs, particularly focusing on the Ultra Feed from Sew Right.
I have been involved in leatherwork for a couple of years, and I recently discovered the joys of laser engraving. However, I faced challenges with hand stitching due to personal issues, which made it increasingly difficult for me to continue my projects. I realized that I needed an industrial sewing machine, but space constraints prevented me from acquiring one of those large machines.
The Search for a Portable Sewing Machine
In my quest for a solution, I began researching smaller, more portable sewing machines. Many people recommended the Singer Heavy Duty model, but I found it inadequate for the type of leather I prefer to work with. I primarily use vegetable-tanned leather, which is thicker and stiffer, and requires a more robust machine capable of handling such materials. After extensive research, I concluded that the Ultrafeed LS from Sailrite would be the best fit for my needs.
Unboxing the Ultrafeed
Today, I will unbox the Ultra Feed and share my first impressions. The package is quite substantial, weighing approximately 65 pounds. Let's dive into the unboxing experience.
Initial Impressions
Upon opening the box, I found several components:
- Instruction manuals and power cords
- The sewing machine itself
- A bag of tools
I managed to assemble the machine, and I was thrilled with how it looked. The Ultra Feed is compact and portable, making it an ideal choice for my limited workspace.
Additional Accessories
I also purchased a few extras to enhance my sewing experience:
- **Speed Reducer**: This accessory allows me to sew at a slower pace, which is crucial when working with leather.
- **Leather Accessory Kit**: This kit includes:
- Various thread sizes (92 white, 92 black, 69 white, and 69 black)
- A thread zapper, eliminating the need for a lighter
- Size 18, 19, 20 and 22 needles, along with additional feet for different sewing needs
- Leather clips to avoid damaging the material
- A swing gauge for measuring stitch distance
Conclusion
The total cost for the Ultrafeed and accessories was around $1,600. This price is comparable to some lighter industrial machines, but the Ultra Feed's portability makes it a more suitable option for my current situation.
While I anticipate some limitations regarding the thickness of leather it can handle, I believe this machine will serve as a great starter option. For larger projects, I may still resort to hand stitching, but I am optimistic about the capabilities of the Ultra Feed.
Thank you for joining me today, and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences with the Ultrafeed sewing machine in the future!
